Autumn Season: Tablescaping

If there is one thing we can thank social media for, it’s the constant stream of lust-worthy interiors ideas that fill our feeds. And with the change of season we’re getting pretty excited about mixing things up again at home. An easy way to bring a whole new autumnal vibe is to recharge your table setting, with soft harvest looks, autumnal accessories and decorative nods to Halloween. We asked tablescaping expert Kate Fairlie, from Truffle Tablescapes for her top tips and tricks on how to curate a beautiful autumnal tablescape.

Consider your colour scheme: Whilst you don’t have to stick with a classic autumnal colour scheme (oranges, rusts and chocolate browns), a distinctive, seasonal colour scheme will make your tablescape all the more effective. We like more muted tonal combinations such as harvest gold, dove grey and cream, or soft French blue, navy and silver. Black and white, combined with classic auburns and rusts, also work particularly well during autumn.

Incorporate natural textures: Rustic textures are perfect on a table throughout the autumn months. We love braided or woven seagrass placemats which are an attractive, eco-friendly and biodegradable dining solution. Their warm, natural colour will tone in with your autumn colour schemes. Also try using soft, washed linen napkins, tablecloths or runners - the natural material will drape beautifully and add an extra texture to your table.

Be inspired by nature: Seasonal flowers are an easy way to inject an autumnal update to your décor and table however, we like to take inspiration from the season and the abundance of beautiful produce available during harvest. Whole fruits (we love pears and apples) and veggies (as well as pumpkins, try adding swedes and squashes) will create a tasteful and bountiful display.

Add accessories: Fun Halloween accessories are always a winner throughout autumn. Add clusters of lush velvet or shimmering satin pumpkins, fluffy feather owls and toadstools to a cotton or linen runner placed down the centre your dining table. Be generous with your décor – accessories look best when busy and filled to the brim with autumnal features in seasonal colours.

Add candlelight: Darker nights and candlelight go hand in hand. Candles automatically create a cosy atmosphere - we like to use a combination of low tealight holders and tall, tapered candle holders which add height and drama. A combination of heights created by using candlesticks, vases and accessories will make your tablescape look full and enticing. Just remember not to block sight lines - easy conversation is still the most important element of any meal!
