A Grand Entrance: How to Make the Perfect Christmas Wreath
Nothing says Christmas like a beautifully dressed front door. This year, make your own wreath with a simple, step-by-step guide that delivers maximum impact without the fuss.
You’ll need
Tools
Floristry scissors
Copper wreath ring
Coil wire and straight wires
Thick festive ribbon
Spray bottle with water
Foliage and decoration
Sphagnum moss
A mix of spruce, pine, conifer, holly and ivy
Metallic painted asparagus fern
Decorative extras, dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks, pinecones, ilex berries, birch twigs or baubles
How to make it
1. Build the base
Take small handfuls of damp sphagnum moss and fix them to both sides of the wreath ring using coil wire. This gives the wreath shape and something for stems to sit in.
Tip: Lightly mist the moss as you work to keep everything fresh.
2. Prep the foliage
Cut your foliage into manageable pieces. Longer stems give a looser, more natural look. Shorter, even cuts feel neater and more structured.
3. Add the greenery
Attach foliage at a slight angle, working in one direction around the ring. Tuck stems under the previous layer and secure with wire. Grouping stems together helps the wreath look fuller.
Tip: You only need to decorate the front. The back won’t be seen.
4. Layer in soft decorations
Thread in berries, painted fern and ribbon-tied cinnamon sticks by pushing them into the moss or tying them in place. Step back regularly to check balance.
5. Fix heavier pieces
Wire pinecones, dried orange slices or baubles before weaving them into the wreath. Keep wires tucked away so nothing sharp is visible.
6. Final check
Hold the wreath up and look for gaps. Adjust as needed and make sure the shape stays nicely circular.
7. Hang it
Cut a length of ribbon, attach it securely to the wreath and hang on your door.
Done. A festive welcome that looks considered, generous and properly Christmas.
