Dive Into the Glow: The Lantern Trail Returns to Edinburgh Zoo

A shimmering whale, a mermaid and a giant glowing clam await at Edinburgh Zoo’s Lantern Trail — a magical escape whatever the weather.

A friend and I braved one of the wettest nights of the year to experience Edinburgh Zoo’s newly opened Lantern Trail – and not even a downpour could take away from the magic. While the animals are tucked up in bed, Edinburgh Zoo comes alive with lights, transforming into a glowing under-sea world with giant illuminated creatures guiding the way.

You can walk through a whale, admire a shimmering mermaid rising from the waves and take your family photos inside a giant, lit-up clam that feels straight out of a fairytale. Despite the rain, the colours were vivid, the lanterns dazzling and the atmosphere wonderfully escapist.

Along the trail, stalls offer toasted marshmallows and steaming cups of mulled wine – the perfect comfort on cold, dark evenings. Families wandered in waterproofs, couples huddled under umbrellas, and everyone wore the same expression: awe.

Whether you go on a crisp winter’s night or follow in our soggy footsteps, this year’s Lantern Trail is pure seasonal joy – a must-visit for anyone looking for a little light in the dark.
