First Look: Filmhouse Returns
Inside the newly refurbished home of cinema in Edinburgh
The curtain is rising once more on one of Scotland’s most iconic cinemas. After nearly three years of closure, Filmhouse reopens its doors on Friday 27 June 2025 — and we’ve had a first look inside.
Housed in a converted church on Lothian Road since 1978, Filmhouse has long been a beacon for cinephiles in the capital and beyond. Now, following a £2 million refurbishment and a passionate campaign to save it, the much-loved venue returns with renewed purpose, four beautifully upgraded screens, and a new vision rooted in learning, discovery, and sustainability.
The Details
Comfort has been key to the overhaul. Expect extra legroom, plush seating, and a completely redesigned foyer space. From the 186-seat Screen 1 — equipped with dual 35mm/70mm film projectors, 4K digital projection and 5.1 audio — to the soon-to-open 22-seat Screen 4, the new Filmhouse blends nostalgic projection formats with the latest tech. And yes, the legendary nachos are back on the menu.
The refurbished Filmhouse Bar has also had a glow-up. With seating for 100 and an all-day offering of locally sourced food and drink, it’s set to become a buzzing hub once more for pre-show bites, post-film chats, and casual catch-ups. It’s cinema-going, but elevated.
The Comeback Programme
To mark its comeback, Filmhouse is doing what it does best — showcasing a handpicked programme of world-class cinema. Opening night will screen Cinema Paradiso (1988), Tornatore’s nostalgic love letter to the magic of film. It's a fitting tribute and a moving nod to the venue’s storied past and bright future.
A Cultural Cornerstone Reborn
With patrons including Charlotte Wells, Jack Lowden, and Dougray Scott, and support from global film fans and A-listers alike, the return of Filmhouse is more than a reopening — it’s a cultural homecoming.
