Romantic Beauty Is Back
We all felt it in Wuthering Heights. We definitely felt it in Rivals. From Taylor Swift and Dua Lipa’s headline-making weddings to the revival of Jane Austen, yearning is back, and with it a return to romance. Beauty is following suit with flushed cheeks, blurred lips and hair that’s anything but perfect.
Romance Is Having A Revival
This season, it’s fairytale romance over the pared-back minimalism that has dominated the past decade. Sense and Sensibility, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles, arrived in cinemas in September, while Netflix’s new Pride and Prejudice, with Emma Corrin and Jack Lowden, lands in December. Suddenly, Jane Austen — and romance more broadly — feels contemporary again.
Beauty is reflecting the mood.
The New Romantic Beauty Look
After years of graphic eyeliner, sculpted skin and clean-girl precision, the Autumn/Winter 2026 shows revealed a noticeably softer direction. At Simone Rocha, cheeks were flushed with cranberry red, skin looked deliberately rawer and the overall effect felt romantic without becoming overly pretty.
Across the runways, makeup artists favoured skin that looked like skin, colour that appeared to rise naturally through the cheeks and eyes softened with hazy washes of shadow rather than razor-sharp definition. Lips felt less meticulously drawn, while hair embraced movement, texture and a certain deliberate imperfection.
It felt less constructed, more instinctive.
From Perfection To Personality
The shift makes sense. Fashion has already begun to move away from the relentless pursuit of novelty, embracing heirlooms, sentiment and clothes that feel as though they come with a story. Beauty is taking a similar path.
Rather than creating an untouchable version of ourselves, the mood now is warmer and more individual: flushed skin, softened edges, lived-in hair and makeup that doesn’t appear to have taken an hour to perfect.
Beauty Gets A Little Less Perfect
The result is romantic without becoming saccharine, glamorous without feeling overdone and confident in its imperfections. After seasons of chasing flawlessness, perhaps the most desirable beauty look of autumn 2026 is one that looks a little more human.
