Sun Smart: Prep Now for Safe Summer Skin
It might feel a little early to think about getting summer-ready. Cutting back, cleaning up, making small adjustments. This isn’t about a bikini body. It’s about getting your skin into a position where it can cope with summer properly. Strong, hydrated, protected skin behaves better in the sun and looks better long after it.
There’s a persistent myth that you need to “prepare” your skin for summer by exposing it to more sun. You don’t. What you need is skin that’s functioning well before UV levels spike. Spring is your window to repair winter damage, strengthen your barrier and put good habits in place, so summer doesn’t come as a shock.
This is the grown-up way to do it.
RESET AFTER WINTER
Cold weather, central heating and heavier skincare leave most of us with skin that feels sluggish by March. Drier, duller, sometimes reactive. Before adding anything new, focus on repair.
That means a gentle cleanser, a solid moisturiser and easing off aggressive actives if your skin feels tight or unsettled. Healthy barrier function matters more than any single serum. Calm, balanced skin tolerates sun far better than skin that’s inflamed or compromised.
EXFOLIATE, BUT DON’T OVERDO IT
A little exfoliation goes a long way in spring. Once or twice a week is enough to lift winter dullness and help skincare and SPF sit properly on the skin.
Stick to mild acids like lactic or mandelic. Avoid harsh scrubs and daily exfoliation. Over-exfoliated skin is thinner, more sensitive and more likely to burn. The aim is clarity and even tone, not rawness.
ANTIOXIDANTS ARE YOUR BACKUP PLAN
Vitamin C earns its place in spring. Used in the morning, it helps neutralise free radicals created by UV exposure and pollution. It doesn’t replace sunscreen, but it does support it.
Look for formulas that also include vitamin E or ferulic acid. Think of antioxidants as strengthening your skin’s internal defences, not creating a shield.
SPF IS A DAILY HABIT, NOT A HOLIDAY ONE
If you only wear SPF when it’s sunny or when you’re abroad, you’re missing the point. Spring is when consistency matters.
Use a broad-spectrum SPF every morning, at least SPF 30, higher if you’re fair or prone to pigmentation. Apply it to your face, neck and chest as standard. Getting your skin used to daily protection now reduces inflammation and sensitivity when summer UV intensifies.
HYDRATION MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Dehydrated skin burns more easily and recovers more slowly. Topical hydration matters just as much as drinking water.
Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, panthenol and aloe help skin stay supple and resilient. Well-hydrated skin copes better with heat, sun and the inevitable shifts in routine that summer brings.
FORGET THE “BASE TAN”
There is no such thing as a safe base tan. A tan is your skin responding to damage. What you want instead is even tone, elasticity and calm skin.
If you want colour, use self-tan. You get the glow without the long-term cost. Your skin will thank you.
THE LONG VIEW
Spring skin prep is about playing the long game. Strong barrier, consistent protection, fewer extremes. Do this now and summer skin feels easier, looks better and ages more slowly.
Quiet habits. Visible results.
