Taste Film Experience, Edinburgh: A Deliciously Different Night Out
There’s a new kind of night out landing in Edinburgh this May, and it’s one that blurs the line between cinema and supper in the most imaginative way.
The Taste Film Experience Edinburgh invites guests to watch a film while a multi-course menu unfolds in perfect sync with what’s happening on screen. It sounds niche—perhaps even a little odd—but in practice, it’s quietly brilliant.
Hosted within Patina, the experience makes smart use of one of the city’s more unexpected dining destinations. Part restaurant, part bakery, part bar, Patina sits in the calm, design-led surroundings of Edinburgh Park—a space that feels intentionally removed from the chaos of the city centre. Inside, it’s all warm light, crafted interiors and an open, airy feel, with a real emphasis on quality, seasonal produce and artisan baking.
As owner Geffen Yoeli-Rimmer puts it: “Our incredible events space is a hidden gem, perfectly suited to Taste Film’s screenings.” And she’s right—the setting adds to the sense that you’ve stumbled across something a little under the radar.
That said, it’s not the easiest venue to stumble upon. I drove—big mistake. Take the tram. You’ll arrive far more relaxed than I did, after a good half an hour looping an industrial estate wondering if I’d taken a wrong turn. But consider that part of the anticipation, because what awaits feels like stepping into a completely different world.
I went along to experience the Ratatouille Premium Spring dining experience, and like many first-timers, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. As my dining partner (my sister) pointed out early on, there is something slightly unusual about sharing a meal where conversation naturally pauses as the film takes centre stage.
But that hesitation disappears quickly.
Once the lights dim, you’re transported to Paris with Remy—and the experience begins almost immediately. The opening cocktail, a fragrant lemon and lavender mix, sets the tone, arriving alongside the first course, ‘Struck by Genius’. Inspired by Remy’s lightning-bolt moment, it’s a Portobello mushroom filled with a light goat’s cheese mousse and finished with a crisp breadcrumb topping—playful, clever and full of flavour.
From there, the courses unfold in seamless sync with the film. A comforting bowl of soup with croutons and melted cheese lands just as Remy saves Linguini’s pot in the kitchen, followed by the star of the show: ratatouille itself. Here, it’s elevated—served with melt-in-the-mouth slow-cooked lamb and rich, indulgent touches that give the humble dish real depth.
There’s a theatricality to it all that never tips into gimmick. Even the drinks are woven into the story, with a sweet red wine cocktail—‘Critic’s Displeasure’—served in a miniature bottle as a nod to the film’s formidable food critic.
Dessert comes in not one but two acts: a delicate crème brûlée paired with fruit, followed by a playful ‘gateautouille’—a final wink to the film’s most iconic dish.
The courses themselves are deceptively small, each plated with precision and purpose. But don’t be fooled. By course seven, we were completely full—proof that this is as much a serious dining experience as it is entertainment.
What makes Taste Film work so well is its balance. It never feels gimmicky. Instead, it enhances both elements: the film becomes richer through taste, and the food becomes more memorable through context. Service is slick and unobtrusive, meaning you’re never pulled out of the moment—just fully immersed in either the story or what’s on your plate.
Yes, you’ll talk less than a typical dinner. But you’ll experience more—and that’s kind of the point.
The verdict? A cleverly curated, joyfully immersive evening that’s perfect for date nights, sisters, or anyone looking to try something a little unexpected in Edinburgh this spring.
