The Case for Switching Off
By James McLaren
At atera Glasgow, switching off is the point. James McLaren explores why taking a little time for yourself shouldn’t be considered a luxury, but an essential part of living well.
Is it just me, or does there always seem to be something else to do? Another email to answer, another appointment to make, another reason to put yourself at the bottom of the list. And as the days grow shorter, so too can the time we feel we have to get everything done. In a city that rarely seems to slow down, taking a couple of hours for yourself can feel like an indulgence.
It shouldn't.
Opposite Grand Central Station, tucked beneath Oswald Street in the heart of Glasgow, atera offers a different kind of escape. A subterranean bathhouse built around Mediterranean bathing traditions, it invites you to leave the pace of the city upstairs and settle into something altogether slower.
You can see why I was intrigued. Not far to go. Central location. Underground. Time to switch off.
That was before I had even checked out the interiors. Escaping the wind and rain of Glasgow, it really was like entering another world. Rich, textured plaster walls, stairs inviting you down to be greeted by tables of ELEMIS products (always a sign of a decent spa) and the dedicated reception team, ready to check you in and guide you through.
Spas can be a bit overwhelming. I get it. But once you’re there, robe on and towel in hand, you’ve already committed. It’s time to dive in and enjoy it.
The pool invites you to do just that. At 12 metres, the vitality pool is the largest of its kind in Scotland, designed to replicate the effects of a massage with powerful hydrotherapy jets and water maintained at a consistent 37°C. It's the perfect place to start your visit. Make sure to pick your poolside lounger before you do; they make a great base while you explore, and a welcome place to return to and rehydrate between experiences.
After the pool, I headed towards the two experience showers; both side by side in a spacious room, so choose your company wisely. Alternating between hot and cold water can be quite a shock to the system, with the sudden changes in temperature bringing you sharply back into the moment. Heat encourages you to relax, while cold delivers an immediate jolt of alertness.
And if the experience showers aren't quite enough of a temperature change, there's the revitalising plunge pool. At 8–10°C, it's designed to deliver a more intense dose of cold-water immersion, which can stimulate circulation near the skin and leave you feeling remarkably alert. Take the plunge if you fancy it. Personally, I'll leave that one to someone else.
I'm much happier in the ceremonial sauna. Complete with relaxing soundscapes and Mediterranean-inspired aromatherapy blends, it's the perfect place to help soothe your body and calm the mind. There's something about sitting in the warmth, with the soundscape around you and nowhere in particular to be, that makes it easier to let the outside world slip away.
By this point, the appeal of atera starts to make sense. It isn't just about the individual facilities, or how long you can tolerate the heat before heading back into cooler air. It's the rhythm of the experience itself. Warmth, water, a change in temperature, then time to rest. With each stage, the thoughts you arrived with begin to feel a little further away.
You don't need to master the routine or push yourself to the limit. There's no prize for staying in the cold plunge the longest, and I'm certainly not winning that one. It's about finding your own pace, taking what you need from each experience and allowing yourself the time to enjoy it.
Even the changing rooms feel considered. Individual showers and changing spaces offer a little privacy, while the hairdryers and products provided mean you can take your time getting ready without feeling rushed back into the outside world. It's a small detail, but it speaks to the wider experience: everything has been thought through, so you can concentrate on yourself for a change.
The appeal of atera is simple: for a little while, there is nowhere else you need to be.
And perhaps that is something more of us could do with.
Whether you're looking for an occasional escape from the city or somewhere to make part of your regular routine, atera offers both day visits and membership options. You don't need to commit to a new lifestyle to make a little room for yourself. Sometimes, a couple of hours is a good place to start.
