The Cocktail Menu That's Giving Us Another Reason to Escape to St Andrews

Discover the storytelling cocktail experience at The Physician in St Andrews

Nine cocktails. Nine stories. One very good excuse for a weekend by the sea.

We never need much encouragement to head to St Andrews. The beaches, the independent shops, the brilliant restaurants and that unmistakable mix of history and coastal charm always make it worth the journey. But now there's another reason to book a table.

The Physician Bar has launched what is believed to be the town's first storytelling cocktail experience, turning its latest drinks menu into a self-guided journey through some of St Andrews' best-known landmarks, hidden corners and local legends.

Called The Physician's Cocktail Trail, the concept is wonderfully simple. Every cocktail has been inspired by a different place, person or piece of history, with each drink telling a story about the town that inspired it. Rather than simply ordering another round, you're invited to discover St Andrews one cocktail at a time.

The trail begins with Doctor John, a delicate mix of vanilla vodka, citrus and orgeat inspired by pioneering physician and physicist Dr John Adamson, before moving to Hamish's Strut, a tropical blend of mango, rum and peach celebrating everyone's favourite feline, Hamish McHamish.

The self-guided cocktail journey takes you through some of St Andrews' best-known landmarks, hidden corners and local legends

History lovers will appreciate The Haunted Lady, inspired by the eerie legends surrounding St Andrews Cathedral, while Wild Swim captures the fresh, salty feeling of a dip at Castle Sands with rum, honeydew, sea salt and soda.

Golf, of course, couldn't be left out. The Swilcan Bridge combines whisky, honey and pine bitters in tribute to one of the game's most photographed landmarks, while Chariots of Fire nods to the iconic film scenes shot along West Sands with a comforting combination of whisky, Earl Grey, apple and rosemary.

Elsewhere on the menu, Gunpowder references the dramatic history of St Andrews Castle, Red Gown celebrates centuries of university tradition, and Blackfriars Ruin rounds off the experience with a smoky, theatrical serve inspired by one of the town's lesser-known historic sites.

Even better, several of the cocktails are also available as alcohol-free versions, making the experience just as enjoyable whether you're drinking or not.

It's exactly the kind of idea we love: thoughtful, creative and rooted in a genuine sense of place. Whether you're planning a weekend in St Andrews or simply looking for somewhere a little different for evening drinks, The Physician Bar has created an experience that's about much more than what's in the glass.

Because sometimes the best way to discover a town is one cocktail at a time.
