Why Scottish Law Firm Lindsays Has Stood the Test of Time

For more than 200 years, independent Scottish law firm Lindsays has helped families and businesses navigate life’s defining moments.

For most of us, a solicitor enters the picture at pivotal points: buying a first home, starting a business, welcoming a child, navigating a family separation, planning for retirement or protecting the people and places we love. The legal questions may differ, but one constant remains: we all want someone we trust sitting on our side of the table.

That philosophy has shaped independent Scottish law firm Lindsays since 1815, when cousins Frederick Fothringham and John Lindsay opened their first office on George Street in Edinburgh. More than two centuries later, the firm still acts for some of its earliest clients, including the Lochiel and Argyll estates, a testament to relationships measured not simply in years, but in generations.

More Than 200 Years Of Lindsays

Nina Taylor, Chair of Lindsays and a Law Society of Scotland-accredited specialist in Family Law.

Helping to shape the next chapter of that story is Chair Nina Taylor. A highly respected family lawyer with more than three decades of experience, Nina leads Lindsays alongside Managing Partner Andrew Diamond, Chief Operating Officer Ian Beattie and the firm’s Board, balancing the traditions of a 200-year-old business with the realities of modern Scotland.

“Clients want reassurance that whoever they speak to will understand not just their legal issue, but their wider circumstances,” she says.

Those realities look rather different from 1815. Collecting estate rents in cash has given way to advising on renewable energy projects, modern family life, technology businesses and changing property markets.

“What began with two partners has grown into one of Scotland’s leading independent full-service law firms, with offices across Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Perth and Crieff, while remaining proudly Scottish at its heart,” says Nina.

Family Law, Leadership And A People-First Approach

Relationships can span generations, with Lindsays advising families through changing circumstances and every stage of life.

Accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a specialist in Family Law, Nina has extensive experience appearing in both the Sheriff Court and the Court of Session. Her career has been spent advising individuals and families through some of life’s most significant decisions, combining legal expertise with empathy and practical advice.

That experience shapes her approach to leadership. Nina leads a firm that continues to evolve while staying true to the principles on which it was built.

“While a lot has changed over the years, our principles remain the same: to listen carefully, stay approachable, act with integrity and deliver excellence in everything we do.

“Whether it’s a first home or a complex family matter, our role is to provide clarity and confidence at every stage.”

It is a philosophy that runs through the business, where legal expertise is matched by an understanding that behind every case is a person, a family or a business placing their trust in the firm.

“Our people-first approach is perhaps why so many clients return to Lindsays at every stage of life. A first property purchase becomes a growing family. A growing family becomes succession planning. A new business becomes the next generation taking the reins. Rather than a single transaction, the relationship evolves alongside the client.”

A Scottish Law Firm Looking To The Future

For Nina, protecting that culture is every bit as important as delivering excellent legal advice.

“The legal landscape will continue to evolve, but the importance of relationships, trust and understanding what matters most to our clients will not,” she says.

As Lindsays continues to grow, its commitment remains unchanged: independent, rooted in Scotland and focused on building relationships that stand the test of time.
