Glasgow is about to get a new place to switch off — properly.
Opening on Oswald Street this October, Atera Bathhouse and Spa is bringing a slice of Mediterranean bathing culture to the city centre, complete with one of the UK’s largest hydrotherapy pools, hammam rituals, thermal experiences and a treatment menu built around everything from massage and physiotherapy to sleep, hormonal health and menopause support.
And if your idea of a spa has traditionally involved a quick sauna followed by a massage and a robe-clad lunch, this sounds considerably more immersive.
A Bathhouse In The Heart Of Glasgow
Traditional hammam rituals are part of Atera’s Mediterranean-inspired approach to bathing and wellbeing.
Set in a subterranean space beneath the city, Atera has been designed as a calming counterpoint to the pace of Glasgow above.
The idea takes its cues from traditional Mediterranean bathing culture, where heat, water and ritual are part of the experience rather than simply an add-on before your treatment.
Guests will be able to move between the hydrotherapy pool, thermal bathing, a traditional hammam, Rhassoul rituals and guided Aufguss sauna ceremonies, before heading on for massage or more targeted therapies.
In the hammam, warmth is used to soften the skin before traditional cleansing and Kesse exfoliation, while the Rhassoul and hot-and-cold experience showers are designed to help the body relax and reset.
In other words, this is somewhere you’ll want to allow considerably more than an hour for.
More Than A Massage
Atera’s treatment rooms will host a team of 14 therapists specialising in massage, holistic therapies and physiotherapy.
What makes Atera particularly interesting, though, is its focus on personalised care.
Seven treatment rooms will be home to a team of 14 therapists covering massage, holistic therapies and physiotherapy, including specialists in spinal health. Most have more than a decade of experience, with the team also undergoing further training with skincare and spa brands ELEMIS and Comfort Zone.
Treatments won’t simply be chosen from a standard menu and repeated guest after guest. Instead, the intention is to tailor visits around what each person needs — whether that means relaxation, recovery, better sleep or something more specific.
Comfort Zone is also helping Atera develop targeted wellness pathways around menopause, hormonal changes, sleep and cancer care, reflecting a growing shift towards spa experiences that go well beyond facials and fluffy robes.
As Kirsty MacCormick, SVP of Global Operations at bbspa Group and Head of the UK Office, explains: “What one guest needs may be completely different from the next.”
That individual approach is central to the whole concept, with bathing and thermal experiences intended to prepare the body before therapists begin more hands-on work.
The Brands Behind The Treatments
A first look inside Atera Bathhouse and Spa, opening on Oswald Street in Glasgow this October.
Atera will partner with both ELEMIS and Italian skincare and wellness brand Comfort Zone.
ELEMIS treatments will focus on the brand’s signature combination of relaxation and visible skincare results, while Comfort Zone brings more than 30 years of expertise in skin health and longevity to the spa.
Together, the partnerships give Atera’s therapists a wider toolkit with which to tailor treatments rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
What Will It Cost?
Memberships at Atera will start from £140 per month, ranging from access to its premium fitness facilities to more comprehensive packages incorporating treatments and diagnostic testing.
Prefer to dip your toe in before committing? Day-access packages will also be available to non-members, starting from £75.
