Inspiring Woman: Rachel Hanretty — The Edinburgh Entrepreneur Behind Award-Winning Mademoiselle Macaron
When Edinburgh entrepreneur Rachel Hanretty launched Mademoiselle Macaron from her kitchen twelve years ago, she had one simple dream — to bring a touch of Parisian luxury to everyday life. Inspired by her time living in Paris, where she mastered the art of macaron-making, Rachel set out to share her “sweet escapism” with the UK.
Fast forward to today, and that dream has just been crowned Online Bakery Business of the Year at the British Baking Industry Awards in London. Competing against big names including Millie’s Cookies, Blondie’s Kitchen, and The Biscuiteers, Mademoiselle Macaron wowed the judges with its beautifully bespoke website, seamless personalisation, and impeccable customer experience.
“It’s been a journey of love, learning, and late nights,” says founder Rachel Hanretty. “When I started out, it was just me, my Paris recipes, and a mixer in my flat. Now we’re sending thousands of boxes across the country every week. I couldn’t be prouder of what our team of 18 has built.”
Known for its elegant pastel palette, award-winning flavours, and picture-perfect packaging, Mademoiselle Macaron has become the UK’s go-to for luxury gifting, wedding centrepieces, and those small, joyful moments that deserve something beautiful.
Blending playful French charm with modern feminine sophistication, the brand captures the essence of everyday indulgence — a little luxury that sparks big joy. Each handmade macaron is a reminder that you don’t need a plane ticket to Paris to experience a moment of sweetness.
It’s this balance of craftsmanship and creativity that’s helped Mademoiselle Macaron build a loyal following — from Courtney Love to MAC Cosmetics collaborations, and even a cameo in the Barbie movie in 2023.
From her first market stall in 2013 at just 23, to building a £1 million business producing over 20,000 macarons a week, Rachel has weathered her share of challenges — not least the decision in 2019 to pivot from retail and café to focus fully on e-commerce and wholesale. The result? A thriving, modern bakery business that’s as digital as it is delicious.
From Edinburgh to everywhere, Mademoiselle Macaron is living proof that a little dream — paired with passion, persistence, and a sprinkle of sugar — can take you a very long way.
